Frequently asked
questions.
Usage, dosing, storage, sourcing, lab reports, and ordering: answers to the questions we hear most.
What percentage of terpenes should I use in my product?+
For vape cartridges and concentrates, 5-15% by weight is standard, with 8-10% being most common. For edibles and beverages, 1-5% by weight. For topicals and balms, 1-3% by weight. For flower enhancement, 1-2 drops per gram. Always start at the lower end and adjust. Terpene expression varies by carrier, temperature, and application.
Can I mix terpene blends together?+
Yes. Blending our pre-formulated terpene blends or mixing a blend with individual isolates is common practice. When blending, consider how the terpene profiles interact: complementary terpenes (two citrus-forward profiles, two earthy profiles) combine predictably, while contrasting profiles can produce interesting complexity but require testing. Keep total terpene concentration within recommended ranges for the application.
What is the best way to mix terpenes into a concentrate?+
Warm your concentrate to 40-50°C to reduce viscosity, and do not exceed 60°C to avoid terpene degradation. Add terpenes drop by drop while stirring continuously. Use a glass or stainless steel stirring rod and avoid plastic. Mix thoroughly for 2-3 minutes until fully incorporated. Test a small sample before full production batches. Mechanical mixing at low speed is appropriate for large batches.
Do terpenes affect viscosity?+
Yes. Terpenes act as natural thinning agents in concentrate applications. Sesquiterpene-heavy blends (higher myrcene, caryophyllene) thin more aggressively than monoterpene-heavy blends. The viscosity effect is part of why terpene percentage matters: too high a concentration in a cartridge can cause leaking. Test at 2% increments when optimizing for a specific hardware configuration.
Are your terpenes botanically derived or cannabis-derived?+
Most Inca Trail terpenes are botanically derived from non-cannabis plant sources: citrus, conifer, herbs, and other botanical starting materials. These botanical products are never cannabis-derived, which makes them legal to ship in all 50 states and internationally without cannabis-related regulatory restrictions, while producing the same terpene chemistry as cannabis-derived isolates. Two lines are the exception: PEAK and the Emerald Series are 100% hemp-derived for applications that call for hemp sourcing. Every product page and COA states its source, so you always know exactly what you are buying.
Are your terpenes safe to consume?+
Our terpenes are food-grade and manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. They are Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) compounds at appropriate use concentrations. All products are third-party tested for heavy metals, residual solvents, and microbial contamination. Use within recommended concentration ranges. Undiluted terpenes should not be ingested, applied directly to skin, or inhaled at full concentration.
How are your terpene blends formulated?+
Our strain-accurate blends are formulated against published GC/MS data from the referenced cultivar. We cross-reference multiple published analyses to establish consensus terpene ratios, then build the blend from botanical isolates matched to those ratios. The result is verified by third-party GC/MS analysis. BOOSTED and PEAK formulations use proprietary enhancement ratios developed through our internal formulation program.
What is the difference between your product lines?+
Terpene Blends are strain-accurate profiles at standard concentration, our core line. BOOSTED profiles use enhanced terpene loading for more pronounced effect profiles, targeting specific outcome categories (RELAX, FOCUS, SLEEP). Purpose Blends are effect-first formulations not tied to specific strains. PEAK is our hemp-derived isolate line for applications requiring hemp sourcing documentation. Emerald Series profiles are 100% hemp-derived, delivering a full-bodied, gassy aroma that rivals premium cannabis strains. Iced profiles add botanical cooling agents.
How should I store my terpenes?+
Store in a cool, dark location, ideally at 15-20°C (60-68°F). Keep containers tightly sealed when not in use, since terpenes are volatile and will evaporate or oxidize if left open. Avoid exposure to heat, direct light, and oxygen. Refrigeration is acceptable but not required for most products. Do not freeze. Keep away from open flames, as terpenes are flammable.
What is the shelf life of terpene products?+
Properly stored terpene blends and isolates have a shelf life of 12-24 months from the manufacture date. Monoterpene-heavy profiles (citrus-forward, pine-forward) oxidize faster than sesquiterpene-dominant profiles. If you notice significant color change (clear or pale yellow shifting to orange or brown) or a noticeably off smell, the product has likely oxidized. Our products include a manufacture date on every batch label.
Do your products come with Certificates of Analysis?+
Yes. Every batch is tested by an independent third-party laboratory using GC/MS methodology. COAs confirm terpene composition (individual compound percentages), purity (absence of heavy metals at EPA action levels), and safety (no residual solvents above Class 3 limits, negative microbial screening). COAs are available for download on the Lab Reports page or by request at support@incatrailterpenes.com.
How do I verify a batch COA against my received product?+
Match the batch number printed on your product label to the batch number on the COA. If you need a COA for a specific batch not listed on our Lab Reports page, contact us with your batch number and we will provide it within 24 hours.
Do you offer wholesale pricing?+
Yes. Wholesale pricing is available to licensed businesses with documented commercial use. Our standard wholesale discount is 60% of retail (wholesale $8.00 for $20.00 retail blends). Volume pricing is available for orders over $2,000 net. Apply for a wholesale account on the Wholesale page. Approval typically takes 1-2 business days.
Can I get a custom terpene blend?+
Yes. Our custom blending program accommodates minimum orders of 100 mL. Provide your target GC/MS profile, strain reference, or effect description, and our formulation team will build and validate a custom blend to your specification. Custom blend development takes 5-10 business days. Contact us via the Custom Blends inquiry form or email custom@incatrailterpenes.com.
Do you ship internationally?+
We ship to most countries. Because our terpenes are botanically derived (not hemp or cannabis-derived), they are legal to ship in most jurisdictions without cannabis-related restrictions. Some countries have specific regulations regarding terpene imports, so it is the buyer's responsibility to verify compliance with local regulations. International orders ship via DHL Express or FedEx International with full documentation.
Our formulation team responds to technical questions within 24 hours during business days.
